Melissa Etheridge

Biografía

Esta cantante nació el 29 de mayo de 1961 en Kansas, Estados Unidos. Cuando tenía 8 años su padre le regaló una guitarra, y poco después compuso su primera canción, "Don't let it fly away, it's love". Desde los 11 años de edad, comenzó a tocar con las bandas locales en Kansas y luego, a los 18 entró al Berklee College of Music, en Masachussetts.

A la edad de 21 se fue a Los Angeles en busca de una carrera musical. Haciendo un demo, en 1983 con su material blues-rock y tocando en los eventos locales como el "West Coast Women's Festival" (1984), se aseguró su permanencia en la ciudad y ya pudo tocar 5 noches a la semana en The Executive Suite, en Long Beach (California), ahí conoció a Chris Balckwell, fundador de Island Records. Su primera grabación fue para el soundtrack de una película estelarizada por Nick Nolte, "Weeds" (1988). Ese mismo año grabó su primer disco y dio conciertos en Canadá, Alemania, Holanda, Inglaterra y Estados Unidos. En 1989 tocó en la entrega de los premios Grammy.

El primero de enero de 1993, Melissa tocó en el festival gay-lésbico, "Triangle Ball", que fue parte de las celebraciones inaugurales de la presidencia de Clinton, en Estados Unidos, y fue ahí donde reveló públicamente su lesbianismo. Más tarde ese año ganó un Grammy con la canción "Ain't it heavy" por la mejor interpretación vocal femenina de rock.

Tiene dos hijos pequeños, frutos de su relación con la cineasta Julie Cypher, Bailey Jean y Beckett.
